Tiny House KonMari

A couple of years ago, some friends of mine read the bestselling book about decluttering, Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying UpAt the time, I was intrigued by the whole "KonMari" thing as I watched my friends completely overhaul their homes in one fell swoop. It was a way of decluttering that I had never really heard of before, and apparently, it had become all the rage.

For those of you who are not familiar with the KonMari method of tidying, the basic idea is that you sort belongings one category (rather than one room or area) at a time, choosing to keep only those items which "spark joy." (Spark Joy is in fact the name of Kondo's follow up book.) Following the method outlined in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is supposed to result in not only a less cluttered house but also a changed way of thinking about one's belongings and living space. This major purge is supposedly a once-and-done, life-altering event, and my friends who tried it seemed to agree as even after a year, they had not rebounded beyond needing a simple tidy up that they could very quickly.

As I watched in earnest the intense overhaul of my friends' belongings, I longed to join the party, but I had a newborn at the time, and any thoughts of a tidy home flew right out the window to be replaced by sleepless nights and diapers and long nursing sessions.

Two years later, I feel like the time has come to see for myself what this KonMari thing is all about. I checked out The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up from the library the other day, and I will be documenting my experience applying Marie Kondo's recommendations to a tiny house that seems to be a constant clutter magnet despite my best efforts to purge.

I've never been so excited to declutter in my life.
